Robusta coffee tastes earthy and is often said to have a bitter, rubbery/grain-like flavor, with a peanutty aftertaste. Some even describe the taste as something similer to a raw-potato. Robusta can have a bitter flavor but bitter is not always a bad thing!
Before Robusta beans are roasted they conjure smells of peanuts or oats, giving off a nutty, grainy fragrance. Once they are roasted, Robusta beans often smell burnt and perhaps slightly woody. Robusta coffee tends to be bitter compared to Arabica.
The Robusta coffee variety originated in Central and West Africa. At the end of the 19th century, the discovery of Robusta in the Congo opened the way for coffee cultivation on lowland areas. The name Robusta is by no means a misnomer: The variety is stronger, more resistant to diseases and more productive.
